Looking for a fun trick to help your students change improper fractions to mixed numbers?

As a fifth grade math teacher, I found myself leaning on this trick all the time! One of the standards that we covered in fifth grade discussed how every fraction was really just a division problem and this trick reminded them of just that.

When introducing improper fractions to my kiddos, we would always write out an improper fraction and put a big hat on top to indicate that he had a “heavy top hat.” After that we would picture if someone were to come by and push that heavy fraction over. What direction would he fall? Well, his hat would fall over first! This helped my students picture how to set up their division problems and helped to remind them where the numerator and denominator would end up.
